Story of a “White Girl”
Lady Bret Crain Lady Bret is more than just eye candy… though with her old Hollywood beauty, her glamour, her bombshell figure–her legendary bum bum!!! not too mention her candy coated sex appeal–many women are beautiful but not necessarily sexy– always in fresh, endless supply, it may be difficult to travel beyond that…. She credits growing up with her grandmother, movie star, Jeanne Crain, as a great influence over her unique “of another time and world” elegance, beauty and style. “Growing up with Gram Jeanne (this is what she calls her grandmother) gave me a reference point that was very unique. I’ve built upon it and made it my own, but I realize the indelible gift of having her in my life– not every little girl has a movie star’s closet to dress up in, but it’s more than that. It’s a grace, a presence– my grandmothers hand comes out to write her name on “Whats My Line”– you can tell instantly, just by her hand– the huge ring, the way she gracefully writes, her very signature– that you are in the presence of a movie star.”

I Google Jeanne Crain later– Indeed a treasure, they don’t make movie stars like that anymore. The influence of her “Gram Jeanne” and Lady Bret longing as a child to be a movie star like her grandmother is captured in her song “White Girl”. (“White Girl” is her new music video which has Lady Bret visiting her grandmother’s footprints at Graumans Chinese Theatre shot by the award-winning director Juri Koll.)
“It really goes beyond that. As a kid I saw something missing from the world that my grandparents embodied. A style, a grace, a magnitude… I remember once my grandfather telling me that ‘People these days have no respect for anyone. Walking into the grocery store with curlers in their hair. Used to be that women wouldn’t go out without their hair done and matching bag and purse.’ I, too felt that something, the very fabric of society had been torn down. Of course, on days I’m feeling lazy or not up for it, I’m glad I live in a time where you can walk around in sweat pants, yet at the same time there is a certain death in sweat pants… A death of character and aspiration… Definitely of romance!!! It’s a giving up on reaching your greatest good in a way.”
I ponder this while she sips her tea, her English roots showing. “Yes, my maternal grandmother, though not famous, was special and kind and very proper, but not in a stiff way, though not exactly warm either– more cheerful and graceful– but her family dates back to the Mayflower, so that’s as English as an American girl gets! I understood myself much more exploring my genealogy. Pioneers, you know, Darling!”
I love the way she says “Darling”. She has a playful, tongue and cheek mixed in with the glamour, yet, something about her says “not just another pretty face”– take me seriously way– like many of her lyrics. They seem to say, “Come and play but look me in the eye and make it real.”
“My lyrics… They are mostly about sex… And rage… I loathe… Well, never mind what I loathe– What I LOVE is Love and Goodness and Sensuality.” She giggles. “One reviewer said, ‘Sex, sex, sex and more sex’ and compared me to Madonna, the Queen!!!”
But, beyond all of the Hollywood Royalty, Pioneers and sex appeal… there is her voice and her lyrics and… Her presence. There is something about her you need to see in the flesh– her photos are sexy and beautiful, her music is brilliant, witty, super fun, sensual and very well produced (by herself and David Shefler)– but she is even more beautiful in person somehow… I watch her sing at the Sunset in Malibu one night and a fan comes up to her and says, “When I see you live, I just get it. I get you more and your music more. Your photos are pretty, but you are better in person, something radiates.”
Lady Bret laughs her big laugh, “That’s funny! Alfred Hitchcock discovered my grandmother and did a screen test, but he turned her down because he said there was something in person that wasn’t captured on film…. Maybe you really can’t capture a soul, only it’s likeness.”
Well, her likeness is good enough for me–I LIKE– but if you can see her perform live, I highly recommend it. If not, her videos can be seen worldwide on her You Tube channel “Lady Bret’s Livingroom”. Her music is available on iTunes and her likeable likeness can be seen daily on her website ladybret.com
